Being A Kid! Maurice Sendak (Children’s book illustrator & writer) Reflects On Childhood Struggles

Happy Birthday Maurice Sendak

Yesterday he would have been 85!
This video was released in his honor….

You may remember him for “Where The Wild Things Are” or “In The Night Kitchen
These stories were big influences on my children as they grew up.  His imagination, acceptance and courage, expressed in his stories and art, were building blocks in child development.  This man is still an inspiration, leaving his footprint on us all.

Thanks goes out to PBS Digital Studios for this great video.    Enjoy!

POD Printing – Self-Publishing Author’s New Best Friend (Follow the time line of printing)

EZ web logo sm whiteThree years ago a clay piece of the oldest tablet was found outside of Jerusalem and dates back to the 14th century BCE, a significanthCA15N4D7t find that shows the importance of the written word and the scribe, all the way back to the Bronze Age.

People have been writers

for a long time!

Ancient Rome had many significant tablets like the twelve original laws (of the then young Republic) that were written by the Ten Consuls. There were also The History of Rome written by Livy (59 BCE to 17 AD), and The Annals which covered history up to the death of Nero, written by Tacitus (55 AD to 117 AD).

For centuries there have been people who needed to tell the story. Writers used primitive mediums, all that was available, to get out their message and make ancient scrolls and books:
• papyrus (made from pith or center of the papyrus plant and was thick & fibrous),
• parchment (made from hides) and
• vellum (made from calf hide and used in scrolls & was considered finer than parchment), before paper was invented.

The Chinese and Egyptians made paper for centuries. Paper was invented by Cai Lun around 105 AD during the Han Dynasty. The first appearance of paper in Europe was on the Iberian Peninsula (in the area of Spain) during the 10th century when ruled by the Muslim influence.

Papermaking slowly made its way to Germany by 1400. Paper is important to the writer – a needed tool of the craft, if you want your story written down.

The oldest known printed book is The Diamond Sutra which was printed in ancient China during the Tang Dynasty (868 BCE or earlier). Blocks of wood or stone were etched, rolled with inks, and then the image was transferred onto parchment and vellum. This was labor intensive, and of course the books made were rare, mostly decorative and for special people who could afford the art.

465px-Printer_in_1568-ce

thCAMDUII3The flat bed press, invented by Johannes Gutenberg in Germany mid 1400’s, changed everything. This primitive machine, that used movable type pieces, revolutionized book making by its ability to make more copies available. More people could afford books, and so the masses were now able to be part of a more enlightened society that read books. Education is the way to a better world. Lithography is a method of printing on a smooth surface using chemical process to create an image. It was invented by Aloys Senefelder a Bavarian author, in 1796. This was probably the result of an author looking for a better way to publish his work! We still produce lithograph printing today, for high volume runs, which need consistent high image quality in offset printing.

The rotary printing press, that used cylinders carved with impressions and rubbed against continuous rolled paper, was invented by Richard March Hoe in 1847, and improved by William Bullock in 1863.

A Teletypesetter device, used to type telegraphs, was a joint invention by F.E. Gannett of Rochester NY and others, and first demonstrated in 1928. The need for information, not just in books, but for business needs, we being addressed with innovation.

The first working phototypesetting machine was developed by Louis Marius and Rene Alphonse Higonnet. This used a strobe light to project characters on a spinning disk to photography paper.

Chromolithography, or color printing, was developed over the 19th century. This was the initial spark to various printing methods, used, developed and perfected.
These methods include:
Screen-printing, Offset Lithography, Flexography or Flexo printing, Electrophotography developed by Chester Carlson & patented in 1942 and later evolved into Xerographic photocopying in the 1960’s by Xerox, Thermal printers, Dot Matrix printers, and Laser printers.   Now we have ink jet, computer assisted Dye-sublimation printer and the Digital Press.

Today self-publishing authors and business people have the advantage of Print-On-Demand or POD printing.

Many small publishing businesses, Universities and academic presses use this new technology. I worked for a company that used one, and have also been able to get quick jobs printed for other businesses I worked for, by using a Printer who had access to a digital press. The POD press is mostly made to order.

The most recognized is the Espresso Book Machine that prints, collates and binds a book in minutes. It is small enough to fit into most retail store fronts, or could be used in a library. This would be very cost friendly if someone wanted to purchase an out of print book. There are other costs saving benefits for retailers, like lowered inventory costs. This is a revolutionary time for the publishing industry, for education and readers. POD printing is a self-publishing author’s new best friend!

Cheers and Keep writing!

After the Book Expo – Some Publishers See A Strong Future??

DRMI just finished reading this article by Steve Cohen of Forbes Magazine, and I am not sure what to think of the traditional publishing industry’s new hope.

Forbes article – Book-publishing-may-actually-save-itself

I like the idea that the Publishing Industry (the big six) is trying new ideas. The ‘Hackathon’ process they used prior to the BEA event in NYC was a great idea, something new for them, and an innovative approach to getting involved with their readers. The publishing world should always remember - it’s all about the reader.   I like the idea of reader interaction.

This however, seems to fall short of healing all the problems with traditional publishing. There is still a big gap that lays between the writer and the publisher. To me, that is the area that needs some help. If new authors, and disillusioned published authors, choose to self-publish, the traditional publishers will be left with only text books, and table books, and those too could be easily self-pub soon, with the new formatting programs and demand for better format platforms

The reader interaction program is something more in line with fiction. How exactly do they (the big six) plan on attracting new authors who will trust that they, the publishing industry, appreciates their art, and are willing to give writers their fair shake of profit? To me, the Publishing industry still has far to go – and printing Yiddish, or not, has nothing to do with the challenges that face the entire industry today. If writers cannot live off of the profits made through traditional publishing, they have no choice but to self-publish.

Personally, I don’t understand why anyone would not want to keep the profit they have earned, with the hours invested in their story.  I enjoy the process of self-publishing, even though I am very new to it all.  There is a solid community out there, willing to help and share the pitfalls and the rewards.

How about you -  Do you feel as if traditional publishers have a reason to be optimistic?  Or do you feel more authors will self-publish?

Let me know what you plan on doing, and Keep writing -

Happy Friday – YOU ARE FREE to choose your outlook in life

I really enjoyed this video – I hope you take the few minutes to watch too.
Who knows – it just might help you change your focus in life - or make you a happier person.
Happy writing & reading.
PS This is actually taken from a commencement speech given in 2005 by David Foster Wallace. He was a bright man – another fallen writer, taken by depression. He had so much liife inside him – gave so much of himself… the world still remembers him. That makes these words, and this sentiment in the video even more powerful.

Planning Your Writing – Is An Unedited Writing Spree Worth the Time?

paperrevDo you plan your scenes, or just write without the internal editor turned on?

I Just finished the April Camp NaNoWriMo, which is an exercise in writing fluently, and without the internal editor to stop the writing flow. I was able to make my goal, but now I have to go back and edit. Of course, any first draft needs editing.

After a month’s time, I started looking back at the beginning of my story – I opened up a dialogue with a critique group, and it was agreed – IT NEEDED A LOT OF WORK!

So the question remains – was it worth the effort – I humbly say YES.

I know the work I produced needs a lot of rework, but in reality any first draft does. Now I have a starting point, I have an idea on paper and something to work with – and just like many writers also admit, much of it will be garbage, and will need to be crossed out, but some will remain, and will be a good starting point.

All in all, I had a good experience with the NaNoWriMo writing sprees, and I do suggest for any writer to try it, at least once. It was also a good way for me to learn my limits, so that I can put together a real writing schedule for myself, for when I am writing on my own, and there’s not support or tracking done publicly.

Just one more thought – if you use software like Scrivener (or others) there is a tool that you can use to track your daily writing, and the progress of your project. I suggest to use it – it will help you see progress and assist you to attain your goals.Camp-NaNoWriMo-2013-Winner-Lantern-Square-Button

Happy writing!

PS – there is a Bonus to joining NaNoWriMo – If you WIN by accomplishing your goal, you get a 50% discount on Scrivener, or a lower discount if you at least attend the event. There are also other discount offers too!

Hell In A Hand Basket – (That’s how I feel today)

Meatloaf does it again – He is so right. Such a wonderfully refreshing and honest look at who he is and we are – we need to find our muse and use its power to connect with others. No one is alone. We all get depressed sometimes. There are horrible things that happen, like yesterday’s bomb in Boston. We all have loved ones who sometimes are hurt, or worse. Reach out and let them know they are not alone

Best of luck on his album HELL IN A HANDBASKET Love Meatloaf’s music.

Hunger Games- Preview of Catching Fire Trailer – book 2 from YA book series

Hunger Games – Catching Fire Trailer debut

Hoping the second movie is as great as the first – I loved the books! Nothing beats the book for a real look into the world the writer wanted you to see with your mind. But I have to admit – the first movie was great! Did you like it? Are you anxious for Catching Fire?
